Several years ago, when the CSCS card were rolled out as an innovative controlled way of site personnel gaining knowledge and Health & Safety awareness. They were universally welcomed and we all saw the improvement in site behaviour and consequently incidents were reduced. However, as we all adapted to and adopted the scheme instigated by the CITB we (certainly in the sign trade) have become increasingly frustrated by the schemes insistence that we all now gain NVQ accreditation to re-apply for our cards (which is a prerequisite to attending the majority of new build sites. There are only a handful of course providers in the country and none within 30 miles of our base. There are very few that will provide work based training. So after lobbying our trade association which is fully aware of the problems there are no logical steps to gaining a CSCS as an experienced worker/ installer without stumping up the money to get the necessary NVQ. Been quoted £700 – £2500 for a course! Apprentices can get funding so the industry is awash with apprentices in their 30s, 40s and 50s. or skilled men enrolling with CSCS on labourer cards! This cannot be right.
